Rwanda is small, and that makes day trips from Kigali unusually rewarding. In a single day you can watch zebra and hippos in Akagera, stand in the church at Nyamata, walk through a reconstructed royal palace at Nyanza, or, with a very early start, sit with mountain gorillas in the Virungas. This guide compares the main options, gives official fees as of October 2026 where they exist, and is honest about which trips work in one day and which need a night away.
Kigali Safaris plans trips and connects visitors with RDB-licensed tour operators and drivers. We are not a tour operator and we do not run fixed packages, so the travel times and fees below come from Visit Rwanda, the parks and the memorials themselves. Anything we could not confirm from an official source is marked "contact us for a current quote".

Akagera National Park: a safari in one day
Akagera is Rwanda's savannah park, on the eastern border with Tanzania. It covers just over 1,000 square kilometres of lakes, papyrus swamp, plains and low hills, and has been managed by African Parks with RDB since 2010. Lions were reintroduced in 2015 and 18 eastern black rhinos in 2017, so the park is once again home to the Big Five. Visit Rwanda lists 525 bird species, including the shoebill.
How a day trip works
Day visitors staying outside the park pay the entry fee for each day they enter. Visit Rwanda allows around three hours for the drive from Akagera back to Kigali, so a good day trip leaves the city before sunrise, game-drives through the morning, takes a boat trip on Lake Ihema, and heads back in the afternoon.
| Akagera fee (Akagera Management Company) | International visitor |
|---|---|
| Entry, adult, per day | US$100 |
| Entry, child 6 to 12 | US$50 |
| Children 5 and under | Free |
| Vehicle fee, Rwanda or EAC registered car | US$10 |
| Guide in your vehicle, half day / full day | US$25 / US$40 |
| Scheduled boat trip, 1 hour (adult / child) | US$35 / US$20 |
| Park-run game drive, half day, up to 7 people | US$200 per vehicle |
Prices are indicative as of October 2026. The park is cashless: MTN MoMo, card (Visa or Mastercard), DPO or bank transfer. Scheduled boat trips leave at 7.30am, 9am and 3pm, with a sunset trip from 4.30pm, so a day visitor usually takes the 9am or 3pm boat.
For a slower visit with a night drive, read our Akagera safari page.
Nyamata and Ntarama genocide memorials
Outside Kigali, the churches at Nyamata and Ntarama are national memorial sites of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Visit Rwanda lists both among the country's memorials, alongside Nyanza and Murambi. Many visitors combine them in a half day or a full day, often after visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial first to understand the history.
These are places of mourning, not tourist attractions in the usual sense. Dress modestly, follow the guide's instructions, and ask before taking any photographs. We do not have an official source for current fees or opening hours at Nyamata and Ntarama, so contact us for a current quote and we will check through a licensed operator.
Nyanza: the King's Palace
Nyanza, south of Kigali, was the heart of the old Rwandan kingdom. Visit Rwanda describes the King's Palace as a reconstruction of the traditional royal residence: a beautifully crafted thatched dwelling shaped like a beehive. Behind it live long-horned Inyambo cattle, descended from the king's herd, whose keepers still sing to them. The Ethnographic Museum in Huye, further south, makes a good pairing if you are happy with a long day or an overnight stop.
Rwanda ceased to be a monarchy in 1962, and the palace gives a sense of what the royal court looked like before that. It suits travellers interested in culture and history rather than wildlife. Contact us for a current quote on entry and transport.
Gorilla trekking as a very long day trip
A gorilla trek from Kigali in one day is possible, and some visitors with tight schedules do it. Be realistic about what it involves:
- Visitors gather at Kinigi park headquarters at 7am for the briefing.
- Visit Rwanda puts the drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park at about three hours, so you leave Kigali around 4am.
- The hike to the gorilla family takes from 30 minutes to four or more hours, at 2,500 m to 4,000 m.
- You then have one hour with the gorillas, walk back down, and drive about three hours to Kigali.
The permit costs US$1,500 per person for international visitors as of October 2026, with promotional rates for some African and EAC visitors outside June to October. The minimum age is 15. Given the cost, most travellers prefer to sleep in Musanze the night before. Our gorilla trekking in Rwanda page compares the two approaches, and the gorilla permit guide explains booking.
A full day in Kigali itself
If you have only one free day, perhaps between conference sessions at the Kigali Convention Centre, staying in the city is the calmest choice.
- Kigali Genocide Memorial, Gisozi. Ten minutes' drive from the centre. Open 9am to 5pm, last entry 4pm. Entry is free; the Ubumuntu package with audio guide is US$30 for international visitors, and a staff-guided tour for 1 to 5 people is US$200. Allow at least an hour and a half. Children under 12 are not permitted.
- Kandt House Museum. Open daily 8am to 6pm, with a section on the history of Kigali before, during and after the colonial era. Kigali became the capital at independence in 1962.
- Rwanda Art Museum. The former Presidential Palace Museum, open daily 8am to 6pm, with contemporary Rwandan art and the debris of the presidential jet that went down on 6 April 1994 still in the garden.
- Kigali Cultural Village. A market space for artisans and food vendors, with events and workshops.
- Inema arts centre and local markets, both suggested by Visit Rwanda for a day in Kigali.
All prices are as of October 2026. Our Kigali city tour page turns these into a practical route.
Trips that need more than a day
Two of Rwanda's highlights do not fit well into a day trip from Kigali:
- Nyungwe National Park is in the far south west. Chimpanzee tracking starts at 5.30am and park entry is priced per night (US$100 for one night for international visitors as of October 2026). See Nyungwe National Park tours.
- Lake Kivu is best reached as part of a northern or western loop. Rubavu is an hour from Volcanoes National Park, and Visit Rwanda allows about three hours by road from Nyungwe to the lake.
If you would rather not drive yourself, car hire with a driver in Kigali is a simple way to do a day trip, and a 4x4 is the better choice for game drives in Akagera.
Planning checklist for any day trip
- [ ] Check the date is not the last Saturday of the month (Umuganda), when many sites open late.
- [ ] Carry your passport or residence ID for resident or citizen rates.
- [ ] Bring cash in Rwandan francs for small purchases; Akagera itself is cashless.
- [ ] Pack water, a light rain jacket and sun protection.
- [ ] Leave plastic bags at home: they have been banned since 2008.
- [ ] Use a driver from an RDB-licensed operator, or check the company in RDB's public database.
- [ ] Budget tips: Visit Rwanda suggests about US$10 per day for guides and drivers.
- [ ] Get malaria advice before visiting lower, warmer areas such as Akagera.
Choosing between the options
If you want wildlife, choose Akagera. If you want to understand Rwanda's history, combine the Kigali Genocide Memorial with Nyamata and Ntarama. If you want culture and traditional architecture, go to Nyanza. If gorillas are the reason for your trip, consider an overnight rather than a single day, and secure the permit first.
Plan your day trip
Tell us through the form on this page which day you are free, how many people are travelling, where you are staying in Kigali and what interests you most. We will suggest a realistic plan and connect you with RDB-licensed operators and drivers who can confirm timings and send you a current quote.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do an Akagera safari as a day trip from Kigali?
Yes. Day visitors pay the park entry fee for each day they enter, US$100 per international adult as of October 2026, plus a vehicle fee. Visit Rwanda allows around three hours for the drive from Akagera back to Kigali, so leave very early to make the most of the morning game viewing.
Is a one-day gorilla trek from Kigali possible?
It is possible but tiring. Visitors gather at Kinigi park headquarters at 7am, and Visit Rwanda puts the drive from Kigali at about three hours, so you leave in the dark. The trek itself can take from 30 minutes to four or more hours before the one hour with the gorillas.
What is the easiest day trip from Kigali?
A full day inside Kigali needs no long drive: the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi, Kandt House Museum, the Rwanda Art Museum and Kigali Cultural Village are all in the city. The memorial alone deserves at least an hour and a half, according to its own visitor guidance.
Can children visit the genocide memorials?
The Kigali Genocide Memorial does not permit children under 12. The exhibitions describe the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in detail, so older children also need preparation. Ask about rules at other memorials such as Nyamata and Ntarama before you travel with young family members.
Can I visit Nyungwe as a day trip from Kigali?
We do not recommend it. Nyungwe is in the far south west, chimpanzee tracking starts at 5.30am, and park entry is priced per night. Most visitors stay at least one night near the park. See our Nyungwe page for a realistic plan and current official activity fees.
Do day trips run on Umuganda Saturdays?
Umuganda, the national community work morning, takes place on the last Saturday of each month. Museums and the Kigali Genocide Memorial open later that day, from 1pm at the memorial. Plan long drives and city visits for another day, or start after the morning community work ends.
How much does a driver for a day trip cost?
Vehicle and driver rates depend on the distance, the vehicle type and the season, and they are set by each operator rather than by any official body. Contact us for a current quote and we will connect you with RDB-licensed operators and drivers who can price your exact route.
